So we got into the car and drove over.

“Now you know,” said unc, “the American troops were stationed downstairs there. Your mother and her mother and father lived upstairs there and I often visited. Your father was a sergeant and he spoke perfect German. ‘That handsome sergeant Bukowski,’ your mother used to say, ‘I’ll bet he tries to fool all the girls.’ It was just after the war and there was very little food for the Germans and the American troops used to sit downstairs in front of the fire and eat meat and throw the fat and some of the other parts in the fire. It made your mother mad. ‘We could eat that food they burn! They must be bastards to throw food away like that!’ Anyhow, your mother was introduced to sergeant Bukowski and she spit on his shoes and ran upstairs. A couple of nights later sergeant Bukowski came up the stairway and knocked. He had the meat, the good meat, cooked, plus the other things … bread, vegetables. We ate it. And after that, late at night, every night he came up with the meat and we ate it. That’s how they met and became married …”

So that’s how he did it? I thought. Well, yes, that fits with my opinion of him.

“Your father was a very intelligent man,” said Uncle Heinrich.

We walked around to the stairway.

“You see,” he continued, “that’s the stairway where he went up. And that’s the end of the story. We go now.”

And we got into the car and went then …
